'The Jews have returned - stones and knives won't stop us'
Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's grandson tells Arutz Sheva 'Jews are here to stay' in eastern Jerusalem. 'We won't be intimidated.'

Sixty-nine years ago, the Hubara family, a Jewish family living in the heart of Jerusalem, was expelled from their home in the Shimon Hatzaddik neighborhood as the Jordanian army invaded and occupied the city during Israel’s War of Independence.
Called ‘Sheikh Jarrah’ by the city’s Arab population, Shimon Hatzaddik was emptied of its Jewish population, whose homes were then seized by local Arabs.
When Israel liberated Shimon Hatzaddik in 1967, the Hubara family found their home was occupied, like so many other Jewish properties in eastern Jerusalem.
For the next 38 years, the Hubara family’s home in Shimon Hatzaddik remained in Arab hands, with the family unwilling to endure the lengthy legal battles required to redeem the property.
In February 2005, tragedy struck. Shimon and Dalia Hubara’s 26-year-old daughter, Odelia, was murdered near a Tel Aviv beachfront in a suicide bombing attack carried out by the Islamic Jihad terror group.
Following their daughter’s tragic death, the Hubaras decided to take back what is rightfully theirs, turning to the Israel Land Fund for assistance.
Twelve years later, following a court order against the Arab squatters for their refusal to pay rent or repair damage they had caused to the property, police returned the Hubara home.
During Tuesday’s eviction, Arab squatters, aided by far-left activists, protested the eviction and threw cinder blocks at police.
Local Jewish activists say they aren’t intimidated by the protesters, or the harassment Jewish residents of Shimon Hatzaddik face from some local Arabs or foreign activists.
One of the activists, Yoni Yosef, the grandson of the late Chief Rabbi and Shas party spiritual leader Ovadia Yosef, told Arutz Sheva that the Hubara home would not be the last to be redeemed.
As demonstrators continued to hurl cement blocks at police and Jewish activists reclaiming the Hubara home, Yosef seemed unfazed.
“We’ll take these blocks and use them to build even more homes in eastern Jerusalem and elsewhere across the Land of Israel. The Jewish people has returned to its land, despite the stones and knives. We’re here to stay, and we won’t be deterred by [Arab] harassment.”
The house, which was has fallen into disrepair and was damaged by Arab squatters over the years, will be undergo extensive renovations before new tenants are brought in.
“The house needs some serious repairs. There are still no mezuzot, and it lacks the most basic things, except for light and water. God willing, [after the renovations], we'll offer the house to a Jewish family, who will move in and strengthen the neighborhood. The Jewish people has returned to its land and to Jerusalem.”

First Temple-era find in Jerusalem sheds light on ancient Judea
Watch: Names of ancient Israelite kings found on seals discovered in Jerusalem.

Who was Achiav ben Menachem? A collection of dozens of sealings, mentioning the names of officials dated to the days of the Judean kingdom prior to the Babylonian destruction, was unearthed during excavations by the Israel Antiquities Authority in the City of David National Park near the Old City of Jerusalem, in a project funded by the ELAD (El Ir David) organization.
The sealings (bullae- from which the Hebrew word for stamp, “bul”, is derived) are small pieces of clay which in ancient times served as seals for letters. A letter which arrived with its seal broken was a sign that the letter had been opened before reaching its destination. Although letters did not survive the horrible fire which consumed Jerusalem at its destruction, the seals, which were made of the abovementioned material that is similar to pottery, were actually well preserved thanks to the fire, and attest to the existence of the letters and their senders.
According to Ortal Chalaf and Dr. Joe Uziel, directors of the excavation for the Israel Antiquities Authority, “In the numerous excavations at the City of David, dozens of seals were unearthed, bearing witness to the developed administration of the city in the First Temple period. The earliest seals bear mostly a series of pictures; it appears that instead of writing the names of the clerks, symbols were used to show who the signatory was, or what he was sealing. In later stages of the period – from the time of King Hezekiah (around 700 BCE) and up to the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BCE - the seals bear the names of clerks in early Hebrew script. Through these findings, we learn not only about the developed administrative systems in the city, but also about the residents and those who served in the civil service.”
Some of the seals bear biblical names, several of which are still used today, such as Pinchas. One particularly interesting seal mentions a man by the name of “Achiav ben Menachem.” These two names are known in the context of the Kingdom of Israel; Menachem was a king of Israel, while Achiav does not appear in the Bible, but his name resembles that of Achav (Ahab) – the infamous king of Israel from the tales of the prophet Elijah. Though the spelling of the name differs somewhat, it appears to be the same name. The version of the name which appears on the seal discovered – Achav – appears as well in the Book of Jeremiah in the Septuagint, as well as in Flavius Josephus (Antiquities of the Jews 15: 7-8).
Chalaf and Uziel add that the appearance of the name Achiav is interesting for two main reasons. First - because it serves as further testimony to the names which are familiar to us from the kingdom of Israel in the Bible, and which appear in Judah during the period following the destruction of the kingdom of Israel. “These names are part of the evidence that after the exile of the Tribes of Israel, refugees arrived in Jerusalem from the northern kingdom, and found their way into senior positions in Jerusalem’s administration”.
Furthermore, the sealings is the fact that the two names which appear on the seal- Achiav and Menachem- were names of kings of Israel. Though Achav (Ahab) is portrayed as a negative figure in the Bible, the name continues to be in use- though in a differently spelled version- both in Judea in the latter days of the First Temple, as reflected in Jeremiah and on the seal, and also after the destruction- in the Babylonian exile and up until the Second Temple period, as seen in the writings of Flavius Josephus.

On the table: 3,000 units across Judea and Samaria
Approval of 3,000 housing units delayed until after UN General Assembly, so as not to 'arm' Abbas.
Contact Editor Arutz Sheva Staff, 30/08/17 22:27
The meeting of the Supreme Planning Council of the Civil Administration, which was scheduled to convene next week and approve the construction of thousands of housing units in Judea and Samaria, was postponed for another few weeks.
The reason for the postponement is the UN General Assembly, which will be held before the High Holidays, and will be attended by Prime Minister Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.
According to Channel 2, Israel did not want to "arm" Abbas before his visit to the United States and his speech at the UN, so it was decided to postpone the committee's meeting.
What will come up in the committee when it convenes is a series of plans: 700 housing units in Ariel, 260 in Tzufim in Samaria, 97 in Rahelim in Samaria, 86 in Migron in Binyamin, 192 in Negohot in the South Hevron Hills, and more. In total, approximately 3,000 housing units will be submitted for approval in Judea and Samaria.
Yesterday, the defense minister boasted of the thousands of building permits he gave in the last 15 months since taking office, and said that since 2000 there has been “no such momentum” in building in Judea and Samaria.
"Since the beginning of 2017, 1,400 housing units have been approved for marketing, and another 3,400 have been approved for planning procedures. In addition, there are another 7,000 housing units slated for planning, " Liberman told reporters.
