Italian Jews joined the IsraAID nonprofit organization in bringing help to people in central Italy who remain homeless after earthquakes last summer and fall.
A delegation from the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, or UCEI, and IsraAID visited the earthquake zone in recent days and delivered thermal blankets, jackets, shoes, portable heaters and other material, the UCEI reported Wednesday.
A series of powerful quakes in late August and October near the towns of Amatrice and Norcia killed nearly 300 people and left thousands homeless.
In cooperation with Italian civil protection, the Italian military and other organizations, IsraAID has been carrying out relief work in the affected zone since September with the logistical support of the UCEI, which also has been collecting funds and material since the quake hit.
IsraAID has also brought a team of psychologists trained in dealing with the effects of post traumatic stress disorder.

Israeli company Cormorant developing unmanned passenger drone the size of a car to evacuate wounded from dangerous situations.

Flying cars may soon move from science fiction to reality, thanks to an Israeli company.

Urban Aeronautics has been developing an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) capable of carrying passengers for the past 15 years, Reuters reported Tuesday.

The drone, known as the Cormorant, has been referred to as a 'flying car' and a 'flying ambulance.' It is the size of a family car, weighing 1.5 tons, and can carry a load of up to 1,100 pounds.

The Cormorant, formerly called the AirMule, uses internal rotors to fly at speeds of up to 115 miles per hour instead of propellers like a helicopter. Developers from Urban Aeronautics believe that the drone can be used to evacuate people from dangerous or hostile situations or to safely deploy military forces.

Urban Aeronautics founder and CEO Rafi Yoeli told Reuters that the Cormorant could revolutionize warfare. "Just imagine a dirty bomb in a city and chemical substance of something else and this vehicle can come in robotically, remotely piloted, come into a street and decontaminate an area."

Yoeli said that the Cormorant can navigate urban environments more safely than helicopters due its size and its lack of external propellers and blades, which could strike the walls of buildings and power lines, making it easier to evacuate wounded personnel from dense urban areas for medical treatment.

A prototype of the Cormorant underwent its first test flight in November 2016. Urban Aeronautics considered the flight a success, despite several minor glitches. The company is working to ensure that the drone meets the safety standards of the US Federal Aviation Administration, which would allow it to be sold internationally.

Urban Aeronautics hopes to have the Cormorant ready for market by 2020.

The nuclear deal has been great for the Islamic Republic’s coffers. So where is the money being spent?  

Iran has received more than $10 billion in sanctions relief in cash and gold since reaching an interim nuclear deal with world powers in November 2013, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

These payments, which came from unfrozen assets in numerous countries, were favored by Iran as they offered “quick access to its funds and because of complications in wiring money to Tehran,” US officials told the Journal.

Since the interim deal was implemented in January 2014, Iran has been entitled to some $115 billion in sanctions relief. However, Iran “has struggled to access much of its money through more traditional financial channels, such as transfers through foreign banks that once were off limits,” according to the Journal.

Negotiators agreed to give Iran monthly payments of $700 million during nuclear talks, with the country recouping a total of $11.9 billion over 17 months. “To enable the flow of the $700 million monthly payments, the White House signed a series of legal waivers authorizing countries to unfreeze Iranian oil revenues,” the Journal reported, citing US officials. “Without the waivers, those countries in many cases would have been in violation of U.S. secondary sanctions.”

The transfer of the payments in cash and gold was “the kind of financial relief that made Iran’s leaders eager to complete the international nuclear accord,” the Journal added. Some of these payments took place during the negotiations and some took place after the deal was reached. Washington authorized a previously unreported $1.4 billion payment to Iran between July 2015, when the deal was announced, and January 2016, when implementation began, according to U.S. officials.

US senators present bill to obligate president to move embassy to Jerusalem

Three senators reintroduced legislation that recognizes Jerusalem as the undivided capital of the State of Israel and relocates the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. 

US Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Dean Heller (R-NV) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Tuesday reintroduced the Jerusalem Embassy and Recognition Act, legislation that would fulfill America’s commitment to Israel to relocate the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.‎

The legislation, which was initially presented in 2011, recognizes Jerusalem as the undivided capital of the State of Israel and relocates the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. This bill removes the President’s waiver authority that has delayed this move until now, and requires official government documents to reflect this recognition by identifying Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

“Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish state of Israel, and that’s where America’s embassy belongs,” Rubio stated. “It’s time for Congress and the president-elect to eliminate the loophole that has allowed presidents in both parties to ignore US law and delay our embassy’s rightful relocation to Jerusalem for over two decades.”

While on the campaign trail, President-elect Donald Trump stated that his intention to move the US embassy to Jerusalem.

In 1995, Congress passed the Jerusalem Embassy and Relocation Act, which recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel by moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. To date, each American president since Bill Clinton has signed a presidential waiver every six months in order to keep the embassy in Tel Aviv, citing concerns that a move to Jerusalem could hinder the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

The bill withholds certain State Department funds until that relocation is complete.
